The recycle bin in your computer performs the very important purpose of preventing you from losing your files accidentally. Once you delete any file, it gets stored in the Recycle Bin, from where it can be easily retrieved. Only when you decide to empty the Recycle Bin, the file is finally removed from your system. But the Flash Drives, which are becoming very popular with users, lack such a facility. Once you delete a file it gets promptly removed from your system without having to go through a Recycle Bin. But it is easy to incorporate an extra layer of security in your Flash Drive. Point your browser to: http://www.autohotkey.net/~FirstToyLab/project_iBin_download.htm.
Here you will find a small 700 K software program called iBin, which works as a Recycle Bin for Flash Drives. After downloading it, you have to place it in your Flash Drive and run it there to create an iBin folder, which will work as your Recycle Bin. But before the iBin folder gets created, the software is going to indulge in creation of an index of the files that are already there in the Flash Drive. So if you have lot of files in there, then that could take quite a bit of time. Normally it takes 10 minutes for iBin to index 4 GB of files, but if your Flash Drive is empty then the process gets done instantly and you are ready to go.
When you press on the delete button, you will get a pop up message that will ask, “Do you wish to erase data permanently or dump it into the iBin?” There will be three click-able buttons at the bottom of the question – Erase it, Cancel, Dump it in iBin. You can make your choice, according to your needs. However, the protection that iBin offers is not that perfect, because you need to run the programme on every PC or laptop in which you are going to use the Flash Drive. As most of us use the Flash Drives on too many systems, that sort of a thing might not be possible. Also, the present version of iBin is for Windows only. So if you are using a Mac or Linux powered system, this programme is not meant for you.
Ideas cannot be fought except by means of better ideas. The battle consists not of opposing, but of exposing; not of denouncing, but of disproving; not of evading, but of boldly proclaiming a full, consistent and radical alternative.... Ayn Rand
